Trainee UX Consultant (Bristol or London)

Position summary

Our Trainee UX Consultants help us deliver great work by injecting energy and fresh ideas into our business. We want our Trainees to learn the fundamentals of UX consultancy and progress beyond their 6 month contracts to join us permanently as UX Consultants.

Collaboration and team working and will be key in this role, but we’ll also want to know you can work independently.

We value people who show a passion for good design, strong attention to detail, and great written and spoken communication skills. We look for these qualities in their portfolios and in how they present their work.

You’ll probably have a university degree in one of the following areas: Design, Interactive Media, Psychology, Computer Science or HCI. We’ll also consider graduates from any discipline who can demonstrate the relevant skills, or other candidates who can demonstrate academic knowledge and some practical experience of user experience methodologies and practices, including user-centred design.

We’ll need you to have the right to live and work in UK.

 

Performance objectives

Our aim for your 6 month traineeship is for you to get involved in all of the core activities of the UX team at cxpartners. Although we’ll get you working on client projects from your first day, we don’t expect to be able to charge your time to our clients until you’ve been here for 3 months. Your specific objectives will be to:

1. Plan and run some user research, to help gather insights about the users of the products we’re designing. This might include writing a recruitment brief and test plan, running a pilot test, moderating some user research in the lab, taking notes during testing, analysing results and contributing to research reports. It might also include carrying out some stakeholder interviews, and conducting remote research (either moderated or unmoderated).

2. Apply some UX methods and produce some UX documentation. This might include carrying out expert reviews. It will probably involve creating personas, customer experience maps, sitemaps, information architectures, task models and user journey diagrams. We’ll want you to understand UX methods and when to apply them; to be clear, simple and concise in your written communication; and we’ll want to see that your skills are improving through your traineeship.

3. Take part in some UX design activities, to help our team design innovative digital products for our clients. We’ll want you to wireframe, sketch and prototype some interfaces. We’ll want you to base your designs on a clear rationale covering client and user needs and an appreciation of HCI methods.

4. Take part in workshops, and present some work. This is likely to include attending kick-off meetings, requirements workshops and ideation workshops.

As part of this objective we’ll want you, by the end of your 6 months, to have prepared and lead 2 activities in client-facing workshops. We’ll be looking to see that you develop a good manner with clients; that you are thoughtful, measured, persuasive, good at listening, and able to shape ideas. Ultimately, we’ll want our clients to feel you’ve helped faciliate the right choice. Where appropriate, we’ll ask for formal feedback from our clients.

We’ll also want you, by the end of your 6 months, to have prepared and given a presentation to the cxpartners team. This could be an internal expert review or a knowledge sharing session. We’ll want you to demonstrate the same qualities with the internal team as with our clients. We’ll ask our internal team for feedback.

In return, we’ll offer you a salary of £16,000 p.a (Bristol) or £19,200 p.a. (London), and a training budget of £600. We’re also interested in candidates who might wish to relocate to London.
